English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
ESOL success
At MEWA, we provide a high-quality English language development program (commonly referred to as English for Speakers of Other Languages, or ESOL program) that encompasses various components to effectively support English language learners (ELLs) in acquiring and mastering English. Our ESOL program includes techniques, methodology, and curriculum designed to help ELLs develop strong English language proficiency in all four language domains (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).

Students meet with their ESOL-endorsed Mentor Teacher for a live class once a week designed specifically for them. In this live lesson, they practice all four language domains - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - celebrate being multilingual, and receive individualized coaching, support, and encouragement. Students also get help with their other classes while continuing to develop their English skills.

Celebrate being multilingual in a class designed for you! You can earn high school elective credit while getting support in your other classes, continue building your English skills, and receive one-on-one coaching to reach your academic goals. You’ll also get help preparing for the ELPA and SBAC tests, and participate in social-emotional learning, character development, and life skills activities with your grade-level peers.
Students participate in two live lessons each week:
Live Lesson 1: ESOL Success Class. Students meet with their ESOL-endorsed Mentor Teacher for a class designed specifically for them. In this live session, they practice all four language domains - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - celebrate being multilingual, and receive individualized coaching, support, and encouragement. Students also get help with their other classes while continuing to develop their English skills.
Live Lesson 2: MEWA Success Class. Students meet with their grade-level peers and teachers to engage in social-emotional learning (SEL), character development, and life and career skill-building activities. This class fosters equity, inclusion, and a strong sense of school community.
